Soon you´ll see...
Anyway, since the cave air allows some action on the drawing table it´s time to show the most recent assignment that the revenge has committed itself to.
This time around it was a split cover that had to be made and as there is so many of those splits around without much emphasis on graphics it was an honor to try to make a difference on this matter of fact.
That the clients in addition to this is two well known and really cool metal bands did not make things worse either.
Whorse things happen...
Here is how the sketches looked like after some hell raising with the poor pens that were at hand :
Luckily enough, both bands had some initial ideas on how the covers should look like to fit the lyrical themes of both of each tracks on this release.
It´s always great if the visual side of the story correspond with the music and, at best, provides a consistent look on the final product.
Speaking of how the visual corresponds with the musical expression, the genre identity also have to be mentioned. Invasion plays a kind of updated but still orthodox thrash-metal while The Generals has developed more of a Sthlm death-metal sound and style and hopefully this is something that shows, to at least some extent, on how the motifs developed.
The bands had also figured out how to bind the two sides together in a clever way. The idea was to make them go into each other as if they were taken from the same landscape. On the sketch below you can see how this idea came out on paper.
Once the sketch was approved, it was time to sweat some color. After working with a brown red shade with a brush on watercolor paper it looked like this:
Then there was this final problem with how the info was to be placed when there instead of one backside, where you usually put all the crap, were to fronts to deal with. A problem that already was solved by half since the top third of each cover was left blank for this purpose.
Following discussions back and forth with various proposals on how the information would be placed finally ended in the decision that this had to be the winner:
